"An Evening with
Earvin 'Magic' Johnson: A Perspective on Living with HIV"
Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Jr. is known around the world for his distinguished
13-year career in the National Basketball Association. Through his work with Magic
Johnson Enterprises (MJE), Johnson has redefined himself as a businessman who focuses
his efforts on revitalizing neglected communities. As founder and CEO of MJE, Johnson
oversees the strategic direction of the company and explores partnership opportunities
and new business ventures.
An avid philanthropist Johnson lends his support to causes such as the Make a Wish
Foundation, the United Negro College Fund, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the
Starlight Foundation, the American Heart Association and the Urban League. In addition,
Johnson was co-chair for Vice President Al Gore's White House Community Empowerment
Board to encourage leaders and businesses to invest in neglected neighborhoods. He
also was an ambassador of peace for the United Nations.
Johnson has earned five NBA championship rings, led the Los Angeles Lakers to nine
appearances in the NBA finals and was a member of the original Dream Team, winning
a gold medal in the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. During his career with the NBA, Johnson
won three MVP awards and played in 12 NBA All-Star Games.
A Michigan native, Johnson earned his "Magic" nickname as a state champion
basketball player for Everett High School in Lansing, MI. Johnson went on to earn
an NCAA title with Michigan State in 1979.
