The Martin Bucksbaum Distinguished Lectureship
New Opportunities for Enhancing Intellectual Life at Drake University
POSSIBILITIES

It is hoped that members of the campus community will explore creative ways to achieve the purposes of the Lectureship. These might include, in addition to the kinds of lectureships we have had so far, such things as sponsoring a conference on an important topic, to be keynoted by a distinguished lecturer; hosting a scholar-in-residence for two or three days or possibly even two or three weeks (and a semester-long distinguished lectureship would not be out of the question); inviting a lecturer to present a series of lectures--perhaps one in the Fall and another in the Spring--with the intention of publishing the lectures in a book; and inviting a pair or trio of scholars to engage in lecture dialogs over a period of several days.

PROCEDURE

There are no forms to be submitted, at least not yet. Rather, persons or entities wishing to present proposals are invited to discuss their ideas with Neil Hamilton, who serves a Susan Breakenridge, Committee chair or Cowles Library. At an appropriate point, they will be asked to submit a proposal. Consisting of the name of the group submitting the proposal; the prospective lecturer and information about her or him (including such things as addresses and phone numbers); the agency representing the lecturer, if that is applicable; the proposed dates for the lectureship; the plans for the lecture and related activities (such as an informal session in the afternoon in Cowles Library, a dinner for the lecturer, meetings with students, class meetings, a luncheon with students, and community outreach events; if a more extended lectureship or residency is proposed, appropriate details should be provided); the anticipated costs (stipend for the lecturer, travel expenses, and local arrangements charges). At this time, the responsibilities of the proposing group and of the Cowles Library staff will be determined.

Persons interested in reviewing lists of lecturers managed by speakers agencies should ask Susan Breakenridge to show them the catalogs supplied regularly by these agencies. Ms. Breakenridge, Bucksbaum Administrator will coordinate the lectureships (i.e., such things as travel and lodging arrangements and the on-campus schedule, and publicity). Many of the speakers listed in these catalogs are "celebrity lecturers"; some of them have records of genuine accomplishment, others are famous for being famous. Booking speakers through an agency is always more expensive than working directly with prospective speakers, but sometimes such speakers use agencies to protect themselves from too many requests, and the agencies cannot be bypassed. The booking process is sometimes tricky and always quite time-consuming.
