Each link below represents an assessment activity performed at Cowels Library. Assessment activities relate to one or more goals outlined in the Cowles Library Strategic Plan and/or standards set forth by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL).

Holistic
Embraces multiple strategic goals or all library operations.

Academic Library Survey (ALS) -- Academic library survey completed every other year.
ACRL -- The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) annual survey.
Affinity -- An annual survey of the Affinity Group of Academic Libraries.
Budget -- Budget breakdown by account including the original budgeted amounts, reconciled amounts, and ending balances.
Diversity Plans -- Cowles Library's Diversity Plan and Activities.
IPAL -- Iowa Private Academic Libraries annual survey.
LibQual -- Nationally recognized, comprehensive assessment and evaluation tool.
Library Entrances -- Entrance numbers per fiscal year
Library Liaison Program -- Description of program and Liaison agendas from previous meetings.
Web Use Statistics -- Statistics that demonstrate use of the Library's web site.

Goal 1 - Effectiveness
Enhance the effectiveness of the library organization in order to achieve higher levels of quality service, efficiency, diversity, and the quality of work-life.

Committee Membership -- Descriptions of Cowles Library Committees, members, and meeting minutes.
Library Informational Sessons -- The number of informational presentations given by Library staff to Drake community groups outside of course related classroom instructional sessions.
Library Tours given (grade and/or high school)
Percent of G & E (University) -- includes student to $ ratios
Reference and Building Usage Statistics -- Questions answered at the reference desk by Cowles librarians and student staff.
State of the Facility Review -- Documentation of library facilities issues and repair/maintenance needs.

Goal 2 - Collection
Provide an exceptional collection of print and digital information resources that support the learning objectives of the Drake Curriculum.

Benchmarking / Peer Groups -- A list of Drake's peer institutions.
Circulation -- Circulation and renewal statistics per fiscal year as reported in SIRSI.
Collection Statistics -- Basic statistics related to the items in our collection.
Conspectus -- The Conspectus is a strategy for setting acquisitions guidelines (benchmarks) for academic disciplines. This entails relating the number of titles published each year, broken down by the Library of Congress Classification system, to Drake's curriculum. Call numbers are assigned to each academic discipline and the % of the volumes being published are weighted by the level of the program (as assigned in the Collection Development Policy).
Database Usage Statistics -- A monthly breakdown of usage by database.
E-Reserve Reports -- Yearly statistics of electronic reserves from departmental course pages and document hits.
ERSC Minutes -- Minutes of the Electronic Resources Selection Committee of Cowles Library.
Individual University Unit Resources -- Total budget spent on each Dept/Unit regardless of format.
InterLibrary Loan Statistics -- Monthly statistics of borrowing and lending loans and articles
Resources for College Libraries -- Will include benchmarking of the Cowles Library's collection vs. the Resources for College Libraries (available on Bowker's Book Analysis System). Currently (11/15/07) we are still working out bugs in their software.
Serials Solutions Statistics -- A monthly breakdown of usage in which one use is a patron looking up a specific journal.
WorldCat Collection Analysis -- Benchmarking of the Cowles Library's collections (serials and monographs) against selected categories in the WorldCat Collections Analysis.

Goal 3 - Tools
Provide electronic tools that will advance the learner?s ability to conveniently access and utilize scholarly information resources.

Refworks Statistics -- A monthly breakdown of usage.
Usability Study for Web Site -- An initial Web site vision document was created in 2004 which was used to drive a major redesign the following year. An ongoing usability process for evaluating patron behavior will begin in 2008 and inform future changes and enhancement.
Usage of SIRSI iLink -- Number of logins to Library's online Catalogue.
Virtual Reference Statistics -- Statistics related to online chat sessions between reference librarians and patrons.

Goal 4 - Instruction
Provide support services for the use of information resources; deliver instructional and training programs that increase the information literacy of students and faculty.

"Peer Review" of instructional performance
Course Head Count -- LIB 046 class enrollment statistics.
Instructional Sessions: Class- and Faculty-Based -- The Instruction Sessions document tracks available data for instruction sessions delivered by library faculty, upon request, on a one-time basis. The document covers fiscal years 2005-2006 through 2007-2008. The data include the date, course, course instructor, library instructor, place and time for each unit of instruction (session).
Student Evaluations - FYS -- Regular instructor/course evaluations are not distributed to the public.
Student Evaluations of LIBR 046 - Summary -- Regular instructor/course evaluations are not distributed to the public.

Goal 5 - Scholarship
Provide services that advance the creation, preservation and availability of scholarship and archival resources that are unique to Drake.

Cultural Programming List -- The purpose of the Cultural Programming Committee is: to systematically plan for and develop the cultural programs; to coordinate the implementation of program activites; and to develop sources of revenue for the program (via grants and gifts.)
eScholarShare@Drake and Drake Heritage Collection Growth -- Annual breakdown of items added to eScholarShare@Drake and to the Drake Heritage Collections

Goal 6 - Outreach / Marketing
Provide programs and activities that advance the understanding of the role of libraries, information, literacy, and scholarship in our society.

Attendance at events / Number of events -- The library records the approximate number of people attending library related events and records the number of non-library related of events held in the library.
