Research Tips

How do I find paper journals or magazines in Cowles Library?

Quick Answer:

Use the Current Journals List.

Explanation:

The Current Journals List (CJL) lists the electronic and print journals available at Cowles Library. It is the only reliable listing of what journals, magazines, and newspapers Cowles Library has current access to.

  1. Start at the Cowles Library’s website at www.lib.drake.edu
  2. Select Current Journals List.
  3. While the screen is labeled “E-Journal Portal,” it also lists our journals in print.
  4. Using the Find search, type in the first few words of the title. Click on Search. The CJL will create a list of journals that start with the same first title word. Each journal will have the years of coverage and a link to the database it can be found in. Journals that are held only in print copy will read “Drake University Print Holdings.”
  5. Use the Browse by title feature to retrieve an alphabetical list of journal titles beginning with the letter selected.
  6. Use the Browse by subject feature to select a field of interest and browse the journals by subject area.
  7. There is no way to search for only paper-copy journals or magazine.

Important notes:

  • Journals whose subscriptions were discontinued prior to 1995 are not listed in the Current Journals List. These may be found in a book available in the Information Commons. Ask a librarian for help.
  • Drake Law Library journals are not listed in the Current Journals List.
  • Journals in print format are also listed in iLink, the online catalog.
